Responsibly Unlocking Serbia's Potential
In a recent interview, Chad Blewitt, Managing Director of Rio Tinto’s Jadar Project, highlighted Serbia’s unique opportunity to become a key player in Europe’s green transition. He noted that the Jadar lithium and borate deposit, now recognized under the EU Critical Raw Materials Act, positions Serbia at the heart of the continent’s critical raw materials supply chain.

Blewitt explained that the project is currently in the preparatory phase, with the next milestone being the approval of the Environmental Impact Assessment scope by the Serbian Ministry of Environmental Protection. He emphasized Rio Tinto’s commitment to sustainability, including advanced water recycling technologies, biodiversity protection, and transparent community engagement.
Acknowledging past challenges with public perception, Blewitt stressed that the company is focused on building trust through open dialogue and evidence-based communication. “Our goal is to develop this project responsibly, ensuring long-term benefits for Serbia and supporting Europe’s energy transition,” he said.
