The Jadar Project

In 2004, Rio Tinto geologists discovered Jadarite, a new mineral containing lithium and boron. Jadarite, named after the Jadar River, is located near the city of Loznica in Western Serbia. The Jadar deposit is a world-class resource that could potentially provide the foundation of a new electric vehicle supply chain in Serbia.

Marijanti Babić for CORD Magazine: Truth Will Open the Lithium Mine

Marijanti Babić, Country Head Serbia at Rio Tinto, discussed the importance of lithium in the global energy transition and Serbia’s potential to become a key player in this process in an interview with CORD magazine. She emphasized that the next crucial step in the development of the Jadar project is conducting an environment impact assessment study, which Rio Tinto must complete to demonstrate that the project can be carried out safely for both the environment and public health.

She also pointed out that the development of this resource would not only drive Serbia’s economic growth by attracting foreign investment and creating new jobs but also enhance its geostrategic position.
